SPUDSMART.COM32SPUDSMART.COMeyeCANADIANPOTATOCOUNCILDavidJonesManagerPotatoIndustryCo-ordinationCanadianHorticulturalCouncilCanadianPotatoCouncilTheCanadianPotatoCouncilcontinuestobeactiveinadvocatingorCanadianpotatoproducersandhasmadesignifcantprogressonanumberoinitiativesoverthepastyear.AmajormilestonewasreachedwiththecompletionotheNationalPotatoResearchandInnovationStrategy.BasedonaseriesoindustrystakeholderconsultationsconductedacrossthecountrylastsummerthestrategyarticulatesstakeholderprioritiesorresearchandinnovationintheCanadianpotatoindustryoverthenext10yearsandservestoocusresearcheortsorGrowingForward2undingopportunities.ItsdevelopmentwaspartiallyundedbytheAgricultureandAgri-FoodCanadasAgriculturalInnovationProgram.ThestrategyisavailableontheCPCpageotheCHCwebsite.TheCanadianFoodInspectionAgencyhasreleasedthevoluntaryNationalFarm-LevelBiosecurityStandardorthePotatoSectoravailableontheCFIAwebsite.ThisfrstplantsectorbiosecuritystandardwasacollaborativeeortbytheCFIAtheCPCpotatoindustrysectororganizationsandprovincialdepartmentsoagriculturewithundingprovidedbyAAFC.Itidentifesspecifcbiosecuritytargetoutcomesorpotatoesrelatedtoaccessmanagementplanthealthmanagementandoperationalmanagement.Anaccompanyingproducerguidewillprovidecurrentinormationonavarietyobiosecuritybestpracticesthatmaybeimplementedbygrowersontheirarmstomeetthetargetoutcomes.AllpotatoproducersinCanadawillsoonreceivedirectlythroughtheirprovincialorganizationsabiosecuritypackagethatincludestheStandardProducerGuideBiosecurityChecklistandBiosecurityMini-Poster.TheCPChasalsocompletedaprojecttoidentiyplantpestresponsebestpracticesorthegreenhouseandpotatoindustriesinCanada.Activitiesincludedthecompletionoaliteraturereviewtoidentiythecomponentsoexistingplantpestresponseplansinkeyidentifedcountriesointerest.Thiswasollowedbyasurveyostakeholdersinoreigncountrieswithexperiencewithplantpestresponseplanstounderstandhowtheseprogramsworkedatthepracticallevel.BasedonthisinormationamodelobestpracticeswasproposedascomponentsoaplantpestresponserameworkorCanada.ThisprojectwaspartiallyundedthroughAAFCsCanadianAgriculturalAdaptationProgram.TakingtherameworkdevelopedinthisprojectthenextstepwillbetoinitiateanewprojecttodevelopadetailedplantpestresponseplanproposalorCanada.ThecollaborationoNewBrunswickandPrinceEdwardIslandgrowersonexportdevelopmentthroughPotatoesCanadacontinuedthispastyear.ActivitiesincludedexhibitingatinternationaltradeshowshostingincomingtrademissionsandenteringCanadianpotatovarietiesinoreignin-countryperormanceandorregistrationtrialsanddevelopingaweb-basedpotatovarietycatalogue.FundingorthisprojectisbeingprovidedbytheAAFCAgriMarketingProgramthegovernmentsoNewBrunswickandPrinceEdwardIslandPotatoesNewBrunswickandtheP.E.I.PotatoBoard.TheCPCcontinuestoadvocateorpotatoproducersinCanadabyengaginginconsultationsonCFIAmodernizationinitiativesandrespondingtootherimportantindustryissuesincludingtherepealocontainerstandardspotatocystnematodeandtheassociatedimplementationotestingeestheCanadianPartnersinQualityProgramPlantBreedersRightsrenewalandchangestotheSeedPotatoQualityManagementProgram.ThenextmeetingotheCPCisMarch11and12attheWestinHotelinOttawapriortotheCHCAnnualGeneralMeeting.TheCHCsPotatoCommitteemeetingisslatedorMarch15inOttawa.SASKATCHEWANByKirkFlamanPresidentSaskatchewanSeedPotatoGrowersAssociationSaskatchewanpotatoproducersharvestedanaveragecropduringtheallo2012.Conditionsweredrylaterintheallwhichwasdierentthanthepreviouscoupleoyears.TheSaskatchewanSeedPotatoGrowersAssociationheldtheirannualconerenceinlateNovember.OurmembershadanothergreatlistospeakersTopicssuchasFalgroorSmallPotatoProductionHerbicideDritEectivenessoDierentDisinectantsonBRRVarietalDevelopmentControloWirewormandanupdateromCFIAwerepresented.Thankyoutooursponsorsandtradeshowrepresentativesoryourcontinuedsupportorourindustry.MembersoourBoardoDirectorswereelectedandaewnewgrowershavesteppedup.OurboardconsistsotheollowingmembersScottAndersonEllyKonst-vanderVeldtAndrewKazakoJanKonstJeCurtisandJaapHuininga.ThankyoutothosewhohavesteppedorwardTheboardandmembershipotheSSPGAextendstoallpotatoproducersahappyholidayseasonandallthebestin2013.
